The organisational symbol of Centacare: Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton
The humble Chive Flower (Allium Schoenoprasum) was chosen to illustrate the role of Centacare: Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton.
With a history dating back 5000 years and the plant’s healing and protection properties, the nourishing chive flower reflects Centacare’s commitment to supporting and empowering all people within our community.
Many attributes of the chive flower are infused throughout Centacare both as an organisation and in our approach to providing services to clients. As a beautiful companion plant that attracts bees and encourages pollination and growth, the chive flower reminds us that our workoften requires us to walk alongside our clients as a companion on their healing and change journey. In doing so, we seek to enable them to grow and develop the capacity to cope with life’s challenges and the strength to choose new paths when needed.
Just as the long slender stem reaches its coloured bloom toward the sun, so people in need find their way to Centacare where they are treated with compassion, respect and understanding. As the bloom opens and spreads its petals, families and individuals alike get assistance and care from competent and well–trained staff to be able to strive to reach their fullest potential.
Like the chive flower that thrives equally well in suburban gardens or wild scrub lands, Centacare adapts to meet the changing needs of individual clients, families and diverse community groups.
The spreading foliage of the plant symbolises the beneficial ripple effect of Centacare as its mission and work spreads quietly and deliberately out across all parts of the surrounding community. Within the organisation itself, the chive flower mirrors the development of Centacare as it grows and shifts to accommodate changing operational demands, while still focusing on the original beliefs and motivations that inspired its creation in 1974.
During the 2008–2009 period Centacare utilised the seed of the chive flower as the symbol representing the organisation and its people entering a new phase of growth, education and development; commencing a number of new initiatives that will positively impact the way in which services are delivered.
